Interactive Iceland Packing Checklist

In Iceland, locals say "There is no bad weather, only bad clothing." Never pack cotton jeans or basic umbrellas—wind-driven rain requires a true 3-layer system (merino/synthetic base, fleece/down mid-layer, and Gore-Tex/waterproof outer shell). Check off items below as you pack.

05 / Seasons & Daylight

When to Visit Iceland: Weather, Daylight & Road Access

Sitting just below the Arctic Circle at 64°–66°N, Iceland experiences extreme swings in daylight while the Gulf Stream keeps coastal winters milder than many expect (averaging -2°C to +3°C in Reykjavík).

Months Daylight Hours Typical Temps What Is Open & Best Experiences
June – August
(Peak Summer)
18 – 24 hrs (Midnight Sun) 8°C – 15°C (46°F–59°F) All campsites open, Highland F-roads open (from mid/late June), Atlantic puffins nesting on coastal cliffs, best season for tent camping and 2WD Ring Road trips.
May & September
(Shoulder Value)
12.5 – 19 hrs 4°C – 11°C (39°F–52°F) Lower rental rates, fewer crowds at waterfalls. September brings the first dark nights for Northern Lights while the Ring Road remains snow-free most days.
October – November & March – April 7 – 13 hrs -2°C – 6°C (28°F–43°F) Prime Aurora Borealis season combined with good daytime sightseeing hours (especially March/April). Natural blue ice caves open in November; 4x4 SUV recommended.
December – February
(Deep Winter)
4.5 – 8 hrs -5°C – 2°C (23°F–36°F) Magical "golden hour" light all afternoon, blue glacier ice caves at peak stability, snow-draped waterfalls, and long dark nights for Northern Lights. Studded 4x4 required.
06 / Practical Know-How

Practical Tips: Groceries, Cards, Water, eSIMs & Safety

Self-drive route through Þingvellir National Park in Southwest Iceland Money & Payments

100% Cashless (Bring a 4-Digit PIN Card)

You do not need to exchange physical Icelandic Króna (ISK) cash at the airport. Even remote campsite wardens, public toilets, and hot dog stands accept Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Crucial: Bring at least one physical chip-and-PIN card with a 4-digit PIN for unmanned rural fuel pumps.

Campervan camping and self-catering setup beside an Icelandic mountain lake Groceries & Water

Shop at Bónus & Krónan (Never Buy Bottled Water)

Save 50%+ on food by shopping at Bónus (pink pig logo) or Krónan supermarkets before leaving Greater Reykjavík, Selfoss, Borgarnes, Akureyri, or Egilsstaðir. Cold tap water everywhere in Iceland comes straight from filtered glacial springs—bring a reusable bottle and only run the cold tap completely cold before drinking (hot tap water is geothermally sulfurous).

Parka.is, EasyPark & Offline Maps

Many major natural attractions (including Þingvellir, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, Skaftafell, and Jökulsárlón) use automated license-plate cameras for parking (typically 1,000 ISK per car). Download the Parka and EasyPark apps to pay seamlessly, and download offline Google Maps of all of Iceland before driving into the Eastfjords or Highlands.

07 / Common Planning Questions

Iceland Trip Planning FAQ

How much does a 7-to-10 day self-drive trip to Iceland cost?

For two travelers sharing a heated campervan or compact rental car + campsites and cooking most meals from Bónus/Krónan supermarkets, expect roughly €160–€240 per person per day (including fuel, campsite fees, and insurance). Staying in private-bathroom guesthouses and dining out typically averages €280–€420+ per person per day.

How far in advance should I book my rental car or campervan for Iceland?

For June, July, and August trips, book your campervan or automatic 4x4 SUV at least 3 to 5 months ahead—automatic campervans and F-road 4x4s regularly sell out by spring. For shoulder season (May, September, October), 4 to 8 weeks ahead is usually sufficient.

Do I need cash in Iceland or are credit cards accepted everywhere?

Iceland is almost 100% cashless. Visa and Mastercard (plus Apple Pay and Google Pay) are accepted at campsites, swimming pools, supermarkets, and remote cafes. However, you must carry at least one physical chip card with a 4-digit PIN for unmanned rural fuel stations.

How many hours per day should I plan to drive in Iceland?

Aim for 150 to 250 km (2.5 to 4 hours of net driving) per day. Even though the Ring Road is 1,322 km, frequent waterfall stops, single-lane bridges, gravel passes, and changing weather make long 400+ km driving days exhausting.
