Iceland Vehicle & Insurance Guide

Renting a Car or Campervan in Iceland: What You Actually Need to Know

From choosing between a 2WD compact, a 4x4 SUV, or a heated campervan to decoding Gravel, Sand & Ash, and F-road insurance exclusions—here is our independent guide to driving in Iceland safely and without costly surprises.

Last Reviewed: April 2026 Reading Time: 11 min read Coverage: Ring Road, F-Roads, Insurance & Campervans

Quick Summary: Which Vehicle Should You Book?

Summer (June–August) on paved roads (Golden Circle, South Coast, Ring Road): A standard 2WD compact or station wagon is sufficient and fuel-efficient, though a 4x4 offers extra comfort on gravel detours.

Shoulder & Winter (September–May) or Westfjords / Eastfjords: Choose a true 4x4/AWD SUV with high ground clearance and seasonal winter tires.

Highland F-Roads (e.g., Landmannalaugar F208, Kjölur F35, Askja F88): By law and rental contract, you must drive an F-road-approved 4x4 SUV. Standard 2WD cars and non-4x4 campervans are strictly prohibited on F-roads.

01 / Vehicle Categories

Comparing Small Cars (2WD), 4x4 SUVs & Campervans

Every Iceland itinerary places different demands on ground clearance, luggage capacity, and traction. Compare the four main vehicle categories below before you book.

Vehicle Category & Popular Models Best Season Allowed Roads Luggage & Seating Pros & Trade-Offs
Economy / Compact 2WD
June – August Paved roads & well-maintained main gravel roads (No F-roads) 2 adults + 2 large suitcases (or 3 adults with soft duffels) Lowest rental & fuel cost. Low ground clearance makes steep potholes and winter slush risky.
Mid-Size & Full-Size 4x4 SUV
Year-round (Essential Oct–Apr & Highlands) All paved roads, gravel roads & legal Highland F-roads (check river rating) 2–4 adults + 3–4 suitcases Best all-around safety, traction, and clearance. Higher fuel use than 2WD compacts.
2WD Heated Campervan
May – September Ring Road, South Coast, Snæfellsnes (No F-roads) 2–5 sleepers + soft luggage Combines transport and accommodation; total itinerary flexibility. Sensitive to high crosswinds.
4x4 Highland Campervan
June – September Ring Road + Highland F-roads (F-road approved) 2–3 sleepers + expedition gear Unlocks Highland campsites without booking mountain huts. Highest daily rental rate; book 4–6 months ahead.

02 / Seasonal & Route Matching

How to Choose the Right Vehicle for Your Season & Itinerary

Iceland’s road conditions shift dramatically between July’s midnight sun and February’s coastal blizzards. Match your vehicle choice to the actual roads on your itinerary.

Golden Circle & South Coast (Summer)

Paved Classics: 2WD or Crossover

Route 1 (the Ring Road) along the South Coast to Vík and Jökulsárlón, plus the Golden Circle (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss), is 100% paved. Between late May and early September, a standard 2WD hatchback or station wagon handles these roads easily.

Watch out for: Short gravel pull-offs to waterfalls or trailheads (such as Gjáin or Háifoss, which requires high clearance).

Full Ring Road & Snæfellsnes

Long-Distance Touring: Mid-Size SUV or Heated Campervan

While over 90% of Route 1 is paved, detours in East Iceland (such as Borgarfjörður Eystri for puffins or Öxi pass Route 939) and parts of North Iceland feature steep grades and loose gravel surfaces. A mid-size AWD/4x4 SUV or a well-insulated campervan keeps long driving days comfortable.

Luggage tip: Hard-shell suitcases stack poorly in compact trunks—always size up one vehicle class if traveling with 3 or more adults.

Westfjords & Winter Travel (Oct–Apr)

Steep Passes & Ice: Dedicated 4x4 SUV

The Westfjords feature long stretches of unpaved coastal roads (like Route 622 and the road to Látrabjarg cliffs) with sharp switchbacks and no guardrails. And from October through April across all of Iceland, studded winter tires and four-wheel drive are vital for black ice and sudden snow drifts.

Safety rule: Four-wheel drive helps you accelerate and climb, but it does not help you brake faster on sheet ice—always increase following distance.

The Interior Highlands (Late June–Sept)

F-Roads & Unbridged Rivers: High-Clearance 4x4 Only

Mountain tracks marked with an "F" (Fjallvegur) require an F-road-certified 4x4 by law. Easy F-roads like F35 (Kjölur) or northern F208 to Landmannalaugar have no unbridged rivers and suit a Dacia Duster or RAV4. Deep-river tracks like F208 South, F26, or F910 require a large 4x4 (such as a Toyota Land Cruiser) and river-ford experience.

Park outside the river: If heading to Landmannalaugar, park in the lot before the final deep river crossing and walk the footbridge to the campsite.

03 / Protecting Your Deposit

Iceland Car Rental Insurance Explained (And What Is Never Covered)

Standard credit card rental coverage works well in mainland Europe or North America, but Iceland’s volcanic sandstorms, flying gravel, and gale-force winds create unique hazards that standard CDW policies explicitly exclude.

Insurance Type What It Covers Who Needs It?
CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) Basic collision coverage included by law in almost all Icelandic quotes, but leaves a high self-risk deductible (often €1,500–€3,500). Included by default, but insufficient on its own.
SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver) Lowers your collision self-risk deductible down to a manageable amount (or zero with full zero-excess packages). Recommended for all drivers unless relying on verified primary credit card insurance.
GP (Gravel Protection) Covers paint chips, dings, headlights, and cracked windshields caused by stones kicked up by passing vehicles on paved or gravel roads. Essential for everyone. Cracked windshields are the #1 rental claim in Iceland.
SAAP / SADW (Sand & Ash Protection) Covers sandblasted paint, windows, and plastic trim from volcanic ash and glacial outwash sandstorms (especially common between Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, and Höfn). Highly recommended for South Coast and Ring Road itineraries, particularly in spring and autumn.
Tire & Towing Protection Covers flat or punctured tires and roadside assistance costs (rural towing in Iceland can easily exceed €500+ out of pocket). Recommended for Ring Road, Westfjords, and Highland trips.

Critical Exclusions: What NO Icelandic Insurance Covers

Even if you purchase "Zero Excess / Platinum" insurance, almost every rental contract in Iceland voids coverage for the following four situations:

  • 1. Water Damage & River Crossings: Driving into an unbridged river and submerging the engine or electronics is 100% at the renter's personal risk.
  • 2. Wind-Blown Car Doors: Gusts regularly exceed 20–30 m/s. Always park facing into the wind and hold doors with both hands when opening—sprung hinges are almost never covered by basic CDW.
  • 3. Off-Road Driving: Driving off marked roads onto moss, black sand beaches, or lava fields is strictly illegal in Iceland, carries police fines starting at 100,000+ ISK, and voids all insurance.
  • 4. Undercarriage Damage on Unauthorized Roads: Driving a 2WD vehicle on an F-road or rough track marked "Impassable" (Ófært) voids all coverage.
04 / Road Surface & Highland Rules

Gravel Roads, F-Roads & Fuel / EV Tips

Understanding road numbers and surface transitions before you leave Keflavík Airport keeps you safe and protects your security deposit.

Road Numbers

How Road Numbering Works

1-digit (Route 1): The 1,322 km Ring Road—mostly paved two-lane highway with single-lane bridges in the South and East.

2-digit (e.g., Route 35, 54): Primary regional roads; mostly paved with occasional gravel sections.

3-digit (e.g., Route 214, 939): Secondary rural roads, often steep gravel.

F-prefix (e.g., F208, F26): Highland mountain tracks requiring a 4x4 SUV; open only from mid-June/July to September.

Driving Technique

Surviving Gravel Transitions

The most common accidents in Iceland happen where smooth asphalt suddenly turns to loose gravel (marked by the sign Malbik endar).

• Slow down to 50–60 km/h before hitting the gravel.
• Never jerk the steering wheel or slam the brakes if the rear tires drift.
• Ease off the accelerator when oncoming traffic passes to prevent flying stones from cracking your windshield.

Fuel & Charging

Gas Stations & EV Reality

• Rural stations (N1, Olís, Orkan) are unmanned self-service pumps requiring a credit/debit card with a 4-digit PIN.
• Never choose "Full Tank" pre-authorization if you want to avoid a temporary 30,000 ISK hold on your card; select a specific ISK amount instead.
• Never enter an F-road below ¾ tank—there are zero fuel stations inside the Highlands.
• EVs work well on the Ring Road (Ísorka & ON fast chargers), but 4x4 diesel/petrol remains safer for remote Highland expeditions.

05 / Travel Style Comparison

Campervan vs. Rental Car + Guesthouses: Which Is Better?

Having operated both rental cars and camping setups in Iceland for years, here is our honest breakdown of how the two travel styles compare in cost, comfort, and flexibility.

Option A

Heated Campervan

Best for: Summer & shoulder-season travelers (May–September) who want to chase clear skies and avoid rigid check-in times.

  • Total Flexibility: If a rainstorm hits the South Coast, you can pivot north toward Akureyri or Snæfellsnes without losing non-refundable hotel deposits.
  • Food Savings: Built-in gas stoves and coolers let you cook groceries from Bónus or Krónan instead of paying $40–$70 per restaurant meal.
  • Legal Rule: Under Iceland’s 2015 conservation law, you must park overnight at designated campsites (approx. 2,000–2,500 ISK per person/night)—wild parking by the roadside is illegal.
Read our complete Iceland Camping Rules & Gear Guide →
Option B

Rental Car / 4x4 SUV + Guesthouses

Best for: Winter travelers (October–April), families, Highland 4x4 drivers, and anyone who prioritizes a private warm shower and solid roof each night.

  • Storm Resilience: High-profile campervans catch crosswinds earlier than low-profile cars or SUVs, and winter campsite availability is limited.
  • Better Highland Access: A dedicated 4x4 SUV (Duster, RAV4, Land Cruiser) handles rough gravel and F-roads far better than standard panel-van campers.
  • Booking Lead Time: Rural South Coast and Eastfjords accommodations sell out 4–8 months ahead for July and August—book rooms with free cancellation early.

06 / Pre-Booking Checklist

8 Questions to Ask Before Booking an Iceland Rental Car

Run through these eight questions before entering your credit card details to avoid surprise airport counter fees.

1. Is pickup at the KEF terminal or via shuttle?

Some rental desks are inside the Keflavík Airport arrivals hall, while others operate a 5-minute shuttle to nearby rental lots. Verify pickup instructions if landing after midnight.

2. Is the 4x4 explicitly approved for F-roads?

Not every AWD crossover is permitted on Highland F-roads. Confirm in writing that the exact vehicle group is contractually allowed on F-roads.

3. Does Gravel Protection include the windshield and headlights?

Some cheap basic policies exclude glass from CDW. Ensure your Gravel Protection (GP) explicitly covers windshield chips and cracks.

4. Does my campervan have an autonomous night heater?

Never rent a campervan in Iceland whose heater only runs while the main engine is idling. Look for a Webasto or Truma diesel/gas night heater with a secondary leisure battery.

5. Is unlimited mileage included?

A full Ring Road trip with detours easily covers 1,800 to 2,500 km. Confirm your rental contract includes unlimited kilometers.

6. Are studded winter tires included free of charge (Nov–Apr)?

Reputable Icelandic rental agencies fit seasonal winter or studded tires automatically between November 1 and mid-April at no extra surcharge.

7. What is the transmission type?

Manual transmission cars are still common in lower price tiers in Europe. If you only drive automatic, filter specifically for automatic transmission before booking.

8. How should I document vehicle condition at pickup?

Take a 60-second walkaround video plus close-up photos of the windshield, bumpers, roof, and all four wheels before leaving the KEF lot, and repeat at drop-off.

08 / Frequently Asked Questions

Iceland Car Rental & Driving FAQs

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car in Iceland?

If your driver’s license is printed in the Roman/Latin alphabet (such as licenses from the US, UK, Canada, EU/EEA, or Australia) and you have held it for at least 12 months, you do not need an International Driving Permit. An IDP is only required if your license is in a non-Latin script.

What is the minimum age to rent a car or 4x4 in Iceland?

For standard 2WD passenger cars, the minimum age at most Icelandic agencies is 20 years old with at least 1 year of driving experience. For large 4x4 SUVs, luxury vehicles, and larger campervans, the minimum age is typically 23.

Do I really need a 4x4 for the Ring Road in summer?

No—Route 1 (the Ring Road) is almost entirely paved, so a 2WD car is sufficient between June and August if you stay on main roads. However, if you want to drive into the Highlands (any F-road), explore the remote Westfjords, or visit between October and April, a 4x4 is strongly recommended or legally required.

Are headlights required during the day in Iceland?

Yes. Icelandic law requires dipped-beam headlights (not just daytime running lights that leave your taillights off) to be switched on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year—even under the midnight sun.

Can I sleep in a regular rental car or SUV in Iceland?

You may only camp or sleep overnight inside a vehicle at designated campsites (unless you have written permission from a private landowner). Sleeping in pull-outs, rest areas, or national park parking lots outside a registered campsite is illegal.
